Description

Hello, my name is Christoph Totter and I run a market garden in Vienna, Austria of about 2000m².
I started farming 3 years ago after seeing videos by JM Fortier and Curtis Stone going into my 4th season now. My first plot was a small garden where I experimented and dreamed about growing food to feed the world and make money doing it.
In my first season I worked so hard like I have never worked before in my whole life. I turned a plot full of trees and bushes into somewhat farmable land, although i could still find roots that where as big as my legs from time to time. A big chunk of my salads where eaten by slugs and my brassicas where devoured by flea beetles and I made a meager 4000€. (but i guess i learned a lot)

The second year I built a bunch of caterpillar tunnels myself (cause Europe) and tried to farm a whole season from start to finish. Most of my selfmade tunnels where whiped out by wind and weather until I build solid ones with steel frame. I managed to farm a whole season but only barely covered my living expenses…a change was needed.

In April 2019, i rented a naked plot of land without anything on it. Electricity and water had to be laid. Since then I built (with the help of my dad): a prop house, a hoop house , 2 caterpillar tunnels and about 50 no till beds. I brought in about 16m³ compost by hand and bought another 40m³. I have aches everywhere in my body but i feel like i am starting to figure farming out.

I feel like my growing & selling needs more structure and less beating my head against the wall.
One thing @themarketgardeners
#themarketgardenerscholarship will not teach me is how to never give up…
i have certainly learned that by now 😀

Cheers & Thank you
